Obituary for Florence DeShazer
Florence Faye Matheny DeShazer August 9, 1921 - July 5, 2017 |
Florence was a very loving and faithful wife, mother and friend who was loved by all who knew her. Born in Toddville, Iowa to Archie and Alice Matheny, she was the second of four children. In 1945, after teaching for 7 years, she left Iowa to attend Seattle Pacific College in Seattle, Washington. She married Jake DeShazer on August 29, 1946. Jake had participated in the 1942 Doolittle Raid over Tokyo, Japan during World War II and survived 40 months as a POW. In 1948, they moved to Japan as Free Methodist Missionaries and for 30 years they spread the message of Christ’s salvation, love and forgiveness, helping to start 23 new churches throughout Japan. They retired in 1977 to Salem, Oregon. Jake died in 2008 and in 2012 Florence moved to Shoreline, Washington. She leaves behind a brother and sister, her five children, 10 grandchildren, 11 Great Grandchildren and another one due in October and lots of nieces and nephews and their families.
Viewing at 9:30am with Graveside services to follow at 11:00am will be held July 17, 2017 at Restlawn Funeral Home 201 Oak Grove Rd. Salem, Oregon. Following the graveside service, there will be a memorial service at 2:00pm at Salem First Free Methodist Church 4455 Silverton Rd NE Salem, OR 97301.
A second service will be held July 22, 2017 at 1:00pm at Shoreline Free Methodist Church 510 NE 175th St, Shoreline, WA 98155.
